AJ Small Projects
Some pictures from the AJ Small Projects Award event in London a couple of weeks back - a day of crits for all the 24 shortlisted projects, followed by prize giving and the opening of their exhibition. I was there supporting Tim Bayman Architecture’s brilliant house and office project which I’d photographed last year, but ended up taking a few snaps for the Architects’ Journal,...

Twin Sails Bridge, Poole
I travelled down to Poole earlier this week, to shoot some photographs with Speirs + Major of the lighting scheme they designed for this fantastic bridge project. I haven’t visited Poole for about 25 years, but I must say, it has a rather impressive new landmark to be proud of! The bridge was designed by Wilkinson Eyre Architects, with engineering by Giffords. All images...

Views from the train
I went down to London this week for the AJ Small Projects Awards 2012 event, supporting the brilliant shortlisted project by Tim Bayman Architecture (viewable here). More photos will appear of the event later - I’m letting the AJ post them first - but for now, here are some quick snaps taken from the train journeys to get there and back. Mostly power stations and skies caught my eye, it...

AHSS Magazine cover
The lovely people of the Architectural Heritage Society of Scotland put one of my pictures on the cover of their magazine for Autumn 2011. I also helped them judge the photo competition they’d been holding for their members, and wrote a little on some of the themes they’d chosen for the competition.

Bayman House & Office shortlisted for AJ Small...
In the second of a rare brace of blog posts today, I’m delighted to report that Tim Bayman Architecture’s house & office, which I photographed last year, has been shortlisted for the AJ Small Projects Award (you might need to be a registered user to see that article, I’m afraid) As they started doing with the RIBA awards last year, each project gets its own cover. ...

On symmetry and serendipity - a photograph in...
Here’s a photograph from my last trip to Marrakech: Sit, my friends, and I shall tell you the long, rambling, obsessive tale of how I took it… The building is the Ben Youssef Medersa, up in the northern half of the medina of Marrakech, just above the souks. This stunning old Islamic college was founded in the 14th century, but what we see of it today mostly dates to the middle of...

Andrew Doolan Award shortlist
The shortlist for the Andrew Doolan Best Building In Scotland Award has been announced, and I’m pleased to say that of the thirteen projects nominated, I photographed three and a half of them! You’ve heard of the RIBA Stirling Prize for the year’s best British building? Well, this is the same kind of deal for Scotland, and the prize money is higher - the highest of any...

Recent publication
It’s been a busy summer, with lots of interesting jobs, and a fair few bits of interesting publication - online, internationally and nationally. A few of the more interesting for me, though… First off, possibly the most interesting job of the year so far for me: Reiach and Hall Architects’ new Dundee House offices for the council of that fine city. A beautiful - and very large!...

AJ Cover
Always nice to see ones work published, especially when you get a cover shot! I took this one quite a while back - on a freezing cold February morning, if I remember rightly - when I worked for Richard Murphy Architects. This is one of the 89 limited-edition covers that the Architects’ Journal produced this month to celebrate all the projects which won RIBA awards this year, and...

Published in Homes & Interiors Scotland
The current issue of Homes & Interiors Scotland has a nine-page article on a lovely house extension I photographed for Helen Lucas Architects last year. Always nice to see ones photographs published!

Newbattle Gardens
Wow, I really need to update this blog more often. Here we go, then, some shots from last November of a house extension in Dalkeith by Craig Amy Architect. You can see them slightly bigger at my web page: Dave Morris Photography | Newbattle Gardens

Phoenix Flowers
Shots taken for 7N Architects. The ‘Phoenix Flowers’ rise out of a new - and incredibly cheerful red - pedestrian underpass beneath the M8 Motorway in Glasgow. It won the Best Future Building category of the Scottish Design Awards - beating Zaha in the process - and was a really fun project to photograph. It’s getting a fair bit of attention on various design magazines and...

New Flickr photo pages
Well, they’ve been overdue for a while, and I must say for the most part I think the new standard photo pages unveiled by Flickr today are a big improvement. I love the bigger standard views, the arrow key shortcuts, the simplified actions button, and the ‘click on the image to go full-screen on black’ feature. I think I’ll still post links for viewing on white...

7N Architects: Best Future Building
Another of the architects I’ve worked for won an award at the Scottish Design Awards last week! I shot the Sonic Dreams project - pictured above - for 7N Architects in April, and they just won the Best Future Building award for their Garscube Link project, currently on site. So congratulations, everyone at 7N!

Scottish Ballet: Scotland's best new building
Malcolm Fraser Architects won big at the Scottish Design Awards over the weekend. Well done, guys! Here’s a story on the BBC news website. The three days on which I visited to take my photos were utterly plagued with dark skies and heavy rain, and I must admit there’s still a little voice urging me to go back again and get at least some shots in good weather - those rooflights...
